Laura Mulvey discussed women's 'to-be-looked-at-ness' in classic Hollywood films in her essay which is entitled 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema'. It basicly expresses females are in a passive position by sexual imbalance and the female characters appearance is erotic set up for audiences's visual pleasure. It causes female characters to be shown and looked at in a exhibitionist role. In my opinion, the 'to-be-looked-at-ness' of female characters was not only displayed in classic Hollywood films, but it also effects contemporary films a lot. I'm going to connect this idea with a movie called 'The Whistleblower' (2010, directed by Larysa Kondracki) and explain the affections of 'to-be-looked-at-ness' in contemporary films.
